Tara Rafting for Beginners: What to Expect Your First Time

· 6 min read

Tara rafting for beginners requires no previous experience. Every raft has a licensed skipper, there is a safety briefing before the start, and the neoprene wetsuit, life jacket, helmet and paddle are included in the price. The descent takes about 4 hours, and for a first trip we recommend the 3-day rafting package (150€ per person), so you hit the river rested and unhurried.

If it is your first time rafting, it is completely normal to have questions - is it dangerous, what if I fall in, am I fit enough? In this guide we answer what beginners ask us most often before they get into the raft.

Is Tara rafting suitable for beginners?

Rafting the Tara is for everyone who wants to experience a wild river, not only for athletes. A licensed skipper steers the raft, and your job is to paddle on their command and enjoy the canyon. You do not need special fitness or any rafting knowledge. The minimum age is 6, so rafting is also great for families - read more in Tara rafting with kids.

What happens on your first rafting trip?

  1. Breakfast at the camp - the day starts at Rafting Camp Eden, at the confluence of the Tara and Piva rivers.
  2. Transfer upstream - by vehicle to the starting point, about a 1-hour drive.
  3. Gear up - you get a neoprene wetsuit, life jacket, helmet and paddle.
  4. Safety briefing - the skipper explains how to sit in the raft, how to paddle, what the commands mean and the basic safety rules.
  5. The descent - about 4 hours through the most attractive part of the Tara Canyon, with 20+ rapids and a short break.
  6. Lunch at the camp - back for lunch and stories about the rapids.

Is Tara rafting safe?

The honest answer: rafting is an adventure sport on a wild river and carries some risk, like any outdoor activity. That is why our safety rules are the same for everyone, with no exceptions:

  • a licensed skipper in every raft who knows the river and guides the boat,
  • a life jacket and helmet worn for the entire descent,
  • a neoprene wetsuit to protect you from the cold water,
  • a safety briefing before the start, mandatory for all participants.

The most important rule for beginners is simple: listen to your skipper. When they call "forward", you paddle; when they tell you to hold on, you hold on. Follow the instructions, and rafting is above all a lot of fun.

When is the best time for your first rafting trip?

The season runs from May to October. For first-time rafting we recommend June, July and August:

Period River Temperature For beginners
May Highest water, strongest rapids water 8-12°C, air 18-24°C For adrenaline seekers
June Lively, water drops in the second half air 22-28°C Great choice, fewer crowds
July - August Calmer river water 16-20°C (warmest) Most relaxed, book ahead
September - October Lower but still raftable water air 15-22°C Quiet, autumn colours

Tips for your first rafting trip

  • Get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast - the descent lasts several hours.
  • Tell your skipper if you are not a confident swimmer or have any health concerns.
  • Leave jewellery and valuables out of the raft.
  • Come on a weekday if you can - it is less crowded and there is a 20% discount.

Which package should beginners choose?

For your first rafting trip we recommend the 3-day rafting package at 150€ per person. On day one you arrive, settle in and meet the crew over dinner and a campfire. On day two, rested and after breakfast, you head out for the roughly 4-hour descent through the canyon, and after lunch there is time for canoeing, a short hike or a swim in the river. Day three is breakfast and the trip home - no rushing and no long drive on the same day you raft.

  • Included: two nights, five buffet meals, rafting with full equipment, transfer to the start, taxes and insurance
  • The lowest price per day of all our packages
  • 20% off on weekdays - the 3-day package then comes to 120€ per person

If you only have one free day, there is the 1-day rafting package at 65€, and for a weekend the 2-day package at 105€. See all options on our Tara rafting packages page.

Once you have caught the bug, try canoeing or the via ferrata and ZIP line. More experienced rafters aged 14 and over can take on the multi-day Rafting 100 km, or combine several activities in the 5-day Adventure Tour.
