"When should we come?" – this is the question we hear every single day. The truth is, every month on the Tara is special and offers a different experience. Your choice depends on what you're looking for: adrenaline and rapids, a family holiday, or a romantic weekend in nature. Here's our detailed month-by-month guide.
May – For True Adrenaline Junkies
In May the Tara flows at its fastest. Melting snow from Durmitor and surrounding mountains fills the river to its peak. Water levels are high, rapids are powerful, and the ride is pure adrenaline. This is the ideal month for experienced rafters and groups of friends seeking extreme rafting in Bosnia.
Water temperature is around 8–12°C (which is why wetsuits are mandatory), but air temperatures are a pleasant 18–24°C. The canyon is in full bloom, the greenery is fresh, and the waterfalls are at their peak.
June – The Sweet Spot
June is in many ways the perfect month for Tara River rafting. The water is still fast enough for an exciting descent, but not too aggressive for beginners. Days are long (up to 15 hours of daylight), temperatures are ideal (22–28°C), and crowds are smaller than in July and August.
Our recommendation: if you have flexibility, June is the ideal compromise between adrenaline and comfort.
July & August – Family Summer on the Tara
The summer months bring warmer water (16–20°C), a calmer river flow, and perfect conditions for families with children, couples, and groups looking for a more relaxed experience. This is also peak season for our rafting camp in Foča, so we recommend booking in advance.
Beyond rafting, in July and August the camp offers evening activities: outdoor parties, riverside barbecues, night kayaking, and stargazing under zero light pollution.
Can Children Go Rafting?
Yes! During the summer months we offer family tours suitable for children aged 7 and over. The route is shorter, skippers are specially trained to work with young ones, and all equipment is available in children's sizes.
September & October – Autumn in the Canyon
If you love peace and quiet, autumn on the Tara is magical. The canyon turns golden-red, crowds are almost non-existent, and temperatures are still pleasant (15–22°C). Water levels gradually drop but remain sufficient for a classic descent.
This is the favourite time of year for photographers, couples, and anyone looking to escape city noise into the complete tranquility of a mountain river.
Every month on the Tara has its own magic. We're here from May to October – the only question is which type of adventure you choose.
