Riding to Durmitor? A Biker-Friendly Stop at the Tara Canyon

· 5 min read

If you are riding the Balkans towards Durmitor or the Piva canyon, Rafting Camp Eden is right on your route: at the Šćepan Polje / Hum border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, where the Tara and Piva rivers meet. Bikes park inside our private, video-monitored camp, you can dry your gear, and you can stay just one night - with breakfast, lunch or dinner as you like.

Every season we see riders from all over Europe passing the camp on their way to Durmitor - and the camp's owner is a motorcyclist too, so we know what you need at the end of a long day in the saddle. This guide is for you: what the camp offers motorcyclists, why it is a good base for the area's famous roads, and what to know before you arrive.

Where is the camp on your route?

The camp is at Hum - Šćepan Polje, 73300 Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina, right next to the border crossing with Montenegro and at the foot of the Tara Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. It sits on the road that links Foča on the Bosnian side with the Piva canyon road towards Plužine, Durmitor and Žabljak on the Montenegrin side.

That makes it a natural overnight stop: the end of a riding day before the border, or a quiet night after a day on Durmitor before you head on through Bosnia. GPS: 43.3507268, 18.8317087.

What the camp offers motorcyclists

  • Run by a rider. The owner rides too - ask about the roads, the tunnels or the best way over Durmitor.
  • Parking inside the camp. Bikes stay on our private property, and the camp is under video surveillance.
  • Gear drying. Caught in the rain in the mountains? There is a place to dry wet riding gear overnight.
  • A night without a package. You do not need to book rafting - stay just one night and add breakfast, lunch, dinner or any other service as you like.
  • Meals for riders passing by. You can stop for a meal even if you are not staying the night.
  • Private bathroom in every unit, plus A-frame cabins if you want more comfort after a long day.
  • Vegetarian, vegan and fasting meals on request.

Famous roads around the camp

The camp is a convenient base for some of the best-known motorcycle roads in the region:

  • The Piva canyon road - from Šćepan Polje along the Piva canyon and lake towards Plužine, with its many rock-cut tunnels.
  • Durmitor and Žabljak - the high mountain roads of Durmitor National Park and the glacial lakes around Žabljak.
  • Đurđevića Tara bridge - the famous bridge high above the Tara Canyon.
  • Sutjeska National Park - on the Bosnian side, towards Tjentište, the Perućica primeval forest, Zelengora and Maglić.

Many of the tunnels on the Piva canyon road are narrow and unlit, so ride with your lights on and take it easy. Road conditions in the mountains change through the season, so check them before you set off.

For adventure and off-road riders

Riding a GS, an Africa Twin, a Ténéré or another adventure bike? The mountains around the camp are criss-crossed with gravel and forest roads, and the camp makes a good base for several days of riding: head out on a day loop, come back to the camp for dinner and a bed, and go again the next morning.

  • Routes from someone who rides them. The owner rides off-road too and can recommend gravel routes - or ride out with you.
  • Mountains on the doorstep: Zelengora, Ljubišnja and the Maglić area on the Bosnian side, with Durmitor across the border.
  • Room for vans and bike trailers - handy if you bring your bikes on a trailer and ride from the camp.
  • Off-road on four wheels: want to see the mountain trails without your bike? Join our jeep safari through forests, highland villages and viewpoints above the canyon.

Parts of the area are protected as national parks (Sutjeska, Durmitor), where riding off designated roads is not allowed. Stay on existing roads and tracks, and ask us which routes are open to motor vehicles.

A rest day on the river

If you have a spare day, swap the saddle for a raft. The 1-day rafting package costs 65€ per person and includes breakfast and lunch, full equipment (wetsuit, life jacket, helmet, paddle) and the transfer: breakfast at the camp, about an hour's drive to the start, about 4 hours through the Tara Canyon with a licensed skipper in every raft, then lunch back at the camp. No experience is needed.

Prefer to stay on dry land? From the camp we also organise guided hikes, jeep safari, horseback riding and canyoning.
